Original 16 Upgrade: RLC Exclusive Custom Mustang!

By Gary Barnum

When the Original 16 Hot Wheels cars were released, they sported plastic wheels which made them fast. Years later, Hot Wheels introduced Real Riders wheels which made our die-cast “look and feel like the real thing.” Collectors have loved that upgraded look since 1983. Our Custom Mustang has worn them before, but rarely. This RLC Exclusive edition with Real Riders will be offered at HWC on 6/30/20.

Featuring an opening hood, this release is coated in Spectraflame Otto blue (named for artist Otto Kuhni, responsible for the art on so much of the early Hot Wheels packaging). And, of course, it rides on Real Riders 5-spoke wheels for that authentic appearance. Add this sweet pony car to your stable!

Guys, this is a release of the original Sweet 16 '67 Mustang. It is meant to be and look exactly that; to feel like the original cars with the same grit, imperfections and not-so-exact look of the original.  The HW Team could have cast a "perfect" piece. Instead they stayed true to  the original design. I think it's perfect.

Also, comparing it to the 302 is not fair. These are two very different castings separated about 30 years (or so?) of casting quality development.

43 year difference to be exact

Well said. I totally agree. I love these original 16 releases and would love to see more.

The detailing around the front grill and headlights is a bit off and the fit of the hood is a bit awkward. It would be acceptable in a mainline Hot Wheels vehicle, but is disappointing in an RLC Exclusive. Nice paint job and looks good from the sides though.

I owned this car in real life since I was 17 years old.  Always my favorite car and still is.  It would be awesome if I can figure out how this site works and buy one of these from you guys, come Tuesday morning.  Like my real 67 fastback, I don't think I will ever sell this one you have either, from HotWheels.  It looks fantastic. Won't even come out of the package.

What justifies the price raise ? This is not a special nor is it an acrylic case model, I don't see why the price has gone up. I've noticed this with previous sales too ..

Because they can, if you don't like the price point then don't buy it. It's called Democracy and in the end the strong shall survive.

Anyhow, I hope to God I get this! My son will think I’m awesome! (Hope I’m still awesome if I don’t 😂).

but this 5 per household thing .. Wow.. that alone lessens chances for people to acquire one .. especially with the membership fee they purchased because you can’t get it, unless you’re an RLC member, right! 👍
