Original 16 Upgrade: RLC Exclusive Custom Mustang!

By Gary Barnum

When the Original 16 Hot Wheels cars were released, they sported plastic wheels which made them fast. Years later, Hot Wheels introduced Real Riders wheels which made our die-cast “look and feel like the real thing.” Collectors have loved that upgraded look since 1983. Our Custom Mustang has worn them before, but rarely. This RLC Exclusive edition with Real Riders will be offered at HWC on 6/30/20.

Featuring an opening hood, this release is coated in Spectraflame Otto blue (named for artist Otto Kuhni, responsible for the art on so much of the early Hot Wheels packaging). And, of course, it rides on Real Riders 5-spoke wheels for that authentic appearance. Add this sweet pony car to your stable!

I am an absolute Mustang and Hot Wheels fan and I will be getting one of these however I agree with others on the look of the front end,  to me it looks like melted or soft butter. Not what I am familiar with out of a Mattel / Hot Wheels product, hopefully this is just on this sample model. They nailed the rest of the car and I love the color!

Looks good.

Hopefully the front end issue is just from that particular photograph.  Hope it looks less melted out of the blister.

The headlights seem a tad small and out of proportion in that frontal view photo. Beautiful color and looks great with those wheels.

Very nice rear-view of those big back tires.  The stance and color scheme are sweet.

The melted headlights are ???

As a Mustang collector, I am very excited to hopefully be able to add this one to the collection. LOVE the blue and the real riders on this one...but...I do agree a more even tire size all around seems to be more fitting. Do not like the skinnies up front. But its a shot at mass appeal, I dont THINK they made it JUST FOR ME?? hahahaha

Definitely be here on Tuesday!

What a beauty! Looking forward to the opportunity to add this Pony to the collection. That peek through hood detail is AWESOME! The Spectraflame Otto Blue is a great choice...and those Real Riders, spot on!

if you look at the card art and the car itself, isnt the centre grill around the mustang horse upside down? notice the chrome walls next the headlights and the 'ceiling' should be the 'floor' if you get what i mean.

Overall it looks pretty nice...I love the color and stripe.  But I'm not so sure about them wheels, specifically the ones in front.  I wish they looked more like the card art.  Will that prevent me from trying to buy one on Tuesday?  Nope.

Good eye!  Too bad you weren't working in QC! It's also missing the vertical chrome below the front bumper, and I agree that it should have the iconic gas cap .

I’m not familiar with how a lot of life size vehicles are supposed to look, but this is a beautiful car. I will be trying for one.
