The flag of the United States has a complex history. Did you know there have been more than 25 designs of the “Stars and Stripes” version used since it first unfurled in 1777? And did you also know historians can’t definitively credit Betsy Ross with its first design? Let’s celebrate this interesting emblem of liberty with a Hot Wheels Stars & Stripes series at Walmart!
While generally credited with the design of the first Stars and Stripes flag, Betsy Ross was likely part of a small group of individuals who had input into its development. Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, claimed credit for its initial design — and he was a naval flag designer! As for what the colors mean, it is said that red represents valor and hardiness, white represents purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
Paying tribute to the Star-Spangled Banner (a term courtesy of Francis Scott Key), these Hot Wheels editions take the elements of our flag to new heights. Wave them proudly in your collection! Find them at Walmart.
One last tidbit for you. Do you know where the “Old Glory” nickname came from? It was first uttered by Captain William Driver in 1831, a shipmaster out of Salem, Massachusetts.
